My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Lyle provides a comprehensive treatment of all areas of forensics in an easy-to-read style and organization. I bought the book because, as a mystery author, I wanted enough information to make my stories authentic as well as provide a good bookshelf reference. Lyle’s book did both for me.
The true case studies were fascinating and appropriately placed to support the science being discussed. When a true case study wasn’t available, he prepared a plausible hypothethical one, as in the section on bloodstain analysis.
The Part of Tens may have been the best part of the book, with narratives of true crimes and how they were solved by different forensic techniques, and also a list of how Hollywood gets it wrong.
