When I was six years old, I received a copy of The Hobbit for Christmas. The gift-giver was a friend of the family, not really that close to me at all. He told me, years later, that he found the book at a flea market and bought it for me because he liked the cover. Many thanks to that cover artist!
It took me only a weekend to finish the book, and it’s still one of my favorites. In between the blue fabric-covered cardboard covers, I discovered magic and delight, a little wisdom (regarding slaying dragons, mostly), and a passion for the written word.
Years later–I’m not divulging how many–I still find I reach for a book when I need to learn something new, need to confirm some fact, or just want to lose myself in a well-crafted story. But how many books can a family keep in one house? Between my two daughters and myself, we have stacks of books in every room, despite every housekeeping attempt to downsize and donate to the local library.
So, here are some of my favorites. The girls are working on their own lists. Enjoy!
